Trailer for the movie about the Stonewall uprising of criticism – “Whites of history” – the Swedish Radio

In the days got the trailer for Roland Emmerich (Godzilla, Independence Day) new film about LGBT activism birth. But many within the LGBT movement in the United States think the film shows a false image of the uprisings.

“Stonewall” about Stonewall Uprising, a series of violent demonstrations against the police in New York in 1969, a period considered to be the starting point for the LGBT rights movement in the United States. The film revolves around Danny, a young gay man who travels to New York to live freely and which is involved in the LGBT movement.



Accused to be misleading

But the trailer has been sharp counter-thrust in online newspapers and social media. The condemnation of votes means that the trailer – and thus probably the movie – invisible the racialized trans women and lesbians, women who stood in the forefront of the historic uprisings.

Among other highlights critics question of the prominent trans women Sylvia Rae Rivera and Marsha P Johnson is not reflected among the cast. Instead visible, according to critics, a misnomer large amount of white cismän, including the protagonist character Danny.

name list has encouraged a boycott of the film and has so far accumulated just under 15,000 signatures.

“Wait till you have seen the movie”

The director Roland Emmerich think that people should see the movie before judging it. He responded to criticism of his Facebook page.

– I understand that the trailer has raised concerns about how starring Danny represents the film, but when this movie comes out, the audience will see that it truly honors the courageous activists from the uprisings, including anadra Marsha P Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Ray Castro, writes Emmerich.

The film was released on September 25 in the United States. Swedish date has yet been set.
