Picasso the most expensive in the world – Swedish Radio

Auction industry continues to set records. On Monday evening was a painting by Pablo Picasso for $ 179.4 million – about 1.5 billion – at Christie’s in New York. It thus became the most expensive work of art at auction so far.

“Les Femmes d’Alger (version O)” as the painting called belongs to a series from the mid 1950 Picasso made based on a painting of the same title by Eugene Delacroix from 1834, and representing women in a harem.

Picasso painting is considered to be among the most significant works from the second half of the artist’s career which is still in private hands, hence the high price. A triptych by Francis Bacon held the previous record ($ 142.4 million).

At Monday’s auction was also set new world record for a sculpture, as Alberto Giacometti’s “L’homme au doigt” was sold for 141.3 million dollars.
