More than 180 artists, including Taylor Swift, U2 and Paul McCartney, and record labels such as Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music have in an open letter criticizing the US Copyright Act digital millennium copyright Act (DMCA).

the message author states that the law benefits the company “uses music for financial gain” but not copyright the people who create the music, reports the BBC.

“the law was written and approved in a time that is technologically dated compared to the time we live in now. The consumption of music has skyrocketed while the remuneration to songwriters and artists have plunged, “the letter said.

Thanks to the DMCA not risk sites like YouTube being sued for music uploaded to them illegally.

the US Congress is currently evaluating the DMCA, while several record companies negotiate their terms with YouTube.
