It was the strong thanks numbers evening at this year’s Oscars. Among those who took the opportunity to make political or inspiring played out as they accepted her Oscar statuette was including John Legend and Alexandro Gonzalez Iñárritu.

Most tears among the gala dressed crowd was there when artists John Legend and Common kept his acceptance speech. They had just received her Oscar for best original song for song Glory from the film Selma.

The film is about the American Civil Rights Movement and protest march from Selma and Montgomery led by Martin Luther King. And Legend drew parallels between the history and the contemporary United States.

Graham Moore, screenwriter of The Imitation game, told me that he tried to kill himself when he was 16 and he felt odd and beyond. But with an Oscar in hand, he wanted to comfort others who felt the same.

– Continue to be weird and different. And when it’s your turn to be on stage, for the same message on.

When Laura Poitras received an Oscar for the documentary Citizen Four of whistle-blower Edward Snowden she took the opportunity to say that the information he uncovered shows threats to democracy. Patricia Arquette struck a blow for women receive the same pay as men, eagerly cheered by including Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lopez in the audience.

But while Birdman got four Oscars, including heavy categories like Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay, so got Boyhood only a single Academy Award.

Somewhat disappointing perhaps for a movie that was filmed during 12 years. Instead, it was The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson, who received four Academy Award – for music, set design, costume and makeup and hair.
