The South African tenor Johan Botha’s death, writes The New York Times. He died in Vienna on Thursday morning, 51 years old, after a brief illness.
Botha broke through internationally as Pinkerton in Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at the Opera Bastille in 1993. Thereafter, he appeared on the world’s greatest opera houses, as the Metropolitan in New York, La Scala in Milan and London Opera. Vienna Opera flag at half mast for Botha and dedicate him this weekend’s set of “Turandot”.
