“Toxic product, racist stench, can damage mental health.” So reads the warning that now exist in some copies of the French edition of “Tintin in the Congo”.

The activist group Groupe d’intervention contre racisme have grown tired of the French publisher Castermans unwillingness to press an explanatory preface to “Tintin in the Congo “. On Tuesday went activists themselves to the bookstore Franc at Les Halles in central Paris and supplied serial albums with warning stickers and skull markings.

Both the British and Swedish edition of “Tintin in the Congo” begins with an introduction that explains the colonial context album drawn in. The Swedish translator Björn Wahlberg criticizes the images of both humans and animals. “The album should ideally be read as a historical document of a vanished Europe,” writes Wahlberg.
