Documentary Filmmaker true Warner birthday song – Radio Sweden

The English birthday song “Happy birthday” could be the world’s most popular piece of music. Until now it has not been used without permission in movies and TV series, but now changes can be made.

A documentary filmmaker who is doing a movie about the birthday song history has sued the music publisher Warner Chappell, who say they own the rights. She believes that song, except for a certain arrangement, in fact, lacks copyright protection, it writes The Guardian.

Since they took over the rights in 1988, the publisher earned over 17 million per year on “Happy birthday”.
