Omar Sharif was a man of many sides – Aftonbladet

He was one of cinema’s most famous doctor.

Omar Sharif as “Doctor Zhivago” moved the world to tears in a final scene that broke many hearts.

Now the actor’s own heart stopped.

Omar Sharif made a strong impression in two of the master director David Lean blockbusters. “Lawrence of Arabia” came in 1962 and in 1965 it was time for “Doctor Zhivago,” a love story with the Russian Revolution as very shaded background.

Omar Sharif plays the doctor who falls in love with Julie Christie’s character Lara. Sentimental song “Lara’s Theme” swept the world and was also a great success in the film track. It was a love of film that is not finished with that they lived happily ever after, and it became a huge success. Like many romantic stories that the audience loved. Happy endings can be overrated.

Active in over 50 years

Omar Sharif made his first engelskpråkiga role in “Lawrence of Arabia”, but launched the film career in Egypt in 1954. He continued to play movies of various kinds, and even in the 2000s, he made the impression of such French “Monsiuer Ibrahim and Quranic flowers” and “Hidalgo” against Viggo Mortensen. Just recently arrived “A house in Morocco” where he had a small role.

In 1999 he was included in “The 13th Warrior”, where even sven wollter and Maria Bonnevie had supporting roles.

Omar Sharif had the sense of humor he showed by being down in the “Airplane” -gängets spy spoof “Top Secret!”. And in 1968 he starred in “Funny Girl” with Barbra Streisand, and even in the sequel “Funny Lady”. He worked with Blake Edwards in a couple of movies.

As a young man he studied mathematics and physics in Cairo before he became an actor. A matte talent that was useful when he later became competitive players in bridge. As early as 1967 he began touring with “Omar Sharif Bridge Circus”. He wrote about the bridge and got out the card game.

Liked casinos

He also liked to play at casinos, and when I met his co-star Tom Courtenay in Berlin recently told the Englishman that the two were friends during the filming of “Doctor Zhivago”. A friendship that made Omar Sharif also became a supporter of the football team Hull City. Omar Sharif continued to follow the team through the years and the time before the Internet, he called the club’s phone line in order to know the results.

A man of many sides.

But it is from David Lean’s films many will remember Omar Sharif. Lavish epic movie storytelling of a kind that no longer made.
