The Cardigans
Liseberg, Wednesday
Best: And Then You Kissed Me
Worst: between songs
Audience: 13 500
Rating: ***
This is the first time in fifteen years that The Cardigans play at Liseberg and ten years since they released their latest album, Super Extra Gravity. It is cynical total can thus grumbling on healthy about “nostalgia gig” but there is hardly anything that can condemn Cardigans beforehand. Especially when the weather gods are with and bathe Liseberg main stage in the sun and a comfortable temperature. The audience is also so great, and then, the concert start may be delayed.
A greater challenge is then that The Cardigans often had the problem that they are musically perfect but close to rail deaths their appearance. Something that certainly works for groups like Kraftwerk who most desire seem unfeeling machines. But for The Cardigans singing about things like love and relationships creates the chilly precision is often a kind of uncanny valley between them and the audience.
But sometimes works fact that the contrast quite well . Like when the songs from the chilly and occasionally violent album Gran Turismo encounters it more warm and calm sound of Long Gone Before Daylight. When the atmosphere becomes palpable, like a warm, refreshing thunderstorm during the summer months.
To begin with And Then You Kissed Me feels mins said unexpectedly, but it does not prevent both it and the subsequent Erase / Rewind almost Lana Del Reykjavík billow over the audience in the mood of love and destruction.
Even old hit You’re the Storm, which easily could have been cheesy, succeeds feel epic and grand but in between discharges are also covered some popmuzak most runs together in the monotony. In those moments, it becomes more sense of it is another day at work for the Cardigans. Even hits like For what it’s worth, despite their poppighet difficult to find prayed and personality and conversation levels among the audience rises.
Fixed professionalism are of course not necessarily a major failure. The band is tight even in songs that did not appeared on the song list before, and Nina Persson still sings like a forest beings who moved to the big city. Nice hat and cloak, she also. Fixed between the talking had been happy to stay at home. Where is the sense of the Cardigans joke around and test the terrain for future gigs additional palpable.
And so there keeps it on. High peaks Lovefool and My Favorite Game intermingled with the more anonymous valleys. It may not always be memorable, but it is in any case almost always fine and nice
