– I hope I have inspired others as older artists inspired me.
Someone who inspired a young Harris was country rock artist Gram Parsons , who died in 1973. It was through him that she landed in country music.
– In the beginning of my career, it was important for me to ride my flag in that particular country. Although no one can really continue on another’s life work, I wanted to work on his. But I have always painted outside the lines, says Harris.
The close fifty years long career, however, runs a common thread. She has always done a lot of duets, numerous collaborations. “It’s like a dance,” she says.
– Oddly enough, I found my own voice when I sang duets with Gram. I love how the two voices form a new one.
She is the first country music artist to receive the Polar Music Prize, which has been awarded annually since 1992. Self listen she is not on country music, at least not on the new one. It will be the most “oldies” – Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn.
Do you ever get nostalgic?
– It may be nice to look back, not to yearn for that which has been but to celebrate what happened. I think it’s normal to be nostalgic at times, it’s part of being human, but I’m just too busy in the present.
This is not an exaggeration. She has just released a second duet album with his friend Rodney Crowell – a sort of tribute to all the artists’ travel, according to Harris – and in the summer waiting for a tour. The future is booked.
How would you like to be remembered?
– As someone who always did what she believed in. I am fortunate to have never had to compromise. I have always surrounded myself with people who believed in me and never pushed me. Once I realized I could do what I wanted it felt like a shame to go against heart’s desire.
